Abstract. The author presents a collective image of the directors of gymnasiums and real schools of the late XIX – early XX century, compiled on the basis of published and archival materials related to the personality of the school heads and the functioning of educational institutions. In many ways, the successful development of the Ural secondary school depended on the professionalism and personal qualities of the director's corps of gymnasiums and real schools.  The information is provided on the specifics of the directors' work. Their financial situation is described (expenses for rent, meals, etc.). The role and importance of directors’ activities in education development in the Urals is shown. The main forms of their work are highlighted. The information about their age, marital status, religion, and education is provided. The main problems of educational institutions at the beginning of the XX century are analyzed and the activities of the director's corps are described. The article focuses on the importance of the directors activities and their influence on the public in the development of education in the Urals.
