Abstract. This article clarifies the concepts of "reflection" and "cognitive strategy" in relation to the methodology of teaching a foreign language, provides examples of the implementation of reflection as a metacognitive activity in the process of teaching foreign languages. The analysis of the Russian methodological literature reveals the relevance of the study, namely the need to find universal effective ways of mastering foreign languages. The object of the study was the process of forming a grammatical skill at the initial stage of teaching a foreign language (English) by university students studying a foreign language (English) as the second one. An attempt has been made to develop exercises that contribute to students' introspection of their educational actions in the process of forming a grammatical skill. The authors of the article identified the transformation of the psychological and pedagogical category "reflection" into a methodological one, and also attempted to apply the phenomena discussed in the teaching a foreign language (English). The role of reflection as a mechanism accompanying the functioning of cognitive strategies used by students in the process of mastering the grammar of a foreign language (English) is revealed. The role of reflection as a mechanism accompanying the functioning of cognitive strategies used by university students in the process of mastering the vocabulary and grammar of a foreign language (English) simultaneously with the process of developing and improving self-analysis skills in relation to themselves as active participants in professionally oriented activities is revealed. The potential of the reflexive question as one of the effective methodological methods of teaching a foreign language both under the guidance of a teacher and in line with the independent work of students is identified and reasoned.

Keywords: reflection, reflexive question, cognitive strategy, grammar skill, lexical skill, teaching, a foreign language.
