Abstract. The article focuses on the difficulties of teaching the Chinese language at the beginners’s level and ways of overcoming them. The analysis of Russian and authentic learning materials points to the necessity of a more individualized systemic approach to acquisition of phonetic, grammar, lexical and writing skills in Chinese.  Our practice of teaching Chinese proves lack of attention to the peculiarities of Chinese phonetics, language tone, grammar structures and hieroglyphic writing, the disregard of which can lead to different comprehension problems in cross-cultural communication. The relevance of the research is determined by the necessity of working out methods and techniques, which allow to overcome linguistic interference in the process of teaching Chinese at the  beginners’s level. The object of the research is the process of the formation of phonetic, grammar, lexical and writing skills in Chinese in Russian university nonlinguistic students. During the research such methods as observation, comparison, description, analogy and classification were used. As a result a set of exercises, adapted to the specific learning materials, allowing to reduce the native language influence on the process of learning Chinese, was developed. Besides, the basic ways of drilling tones, training pinyin system and hieroglyphic writing were supplemented.
