Abstract. The article is devoted to the actual problem of the development of students’ cognitive activity in the conditions of additional education. The authors substantiate the expediency of improving traditional approaches to the solution to the problem. The paper highlights the features of the content of the category "cognitive activity of students". It is concluded that a cognitive interest and a motivation are the main components of cognitive activity of modern schoolchildren. A special role in this process is played by the use of such techniques and technologies that would increase a motivation and achieve the learning goals. These structural elements are to be essential in the choice of methods and means of developing students’ cognitive activity. The paper presents the results of a study aimed at comparing the diagnostics results on the level of development of students’ cognitive activity on the basis of the MAI AE "Palace of Creativity of Children and Youth" in Magnitogorsk and the corresponding survey on parents. Basing on these results there were identified, trends and priorities in improving methods and techniques for the development of the students’ cognitive activity. The materials of the article include work experience that allowed teachers to solve the problems of developing students cognitive activity, interact with parents, providing them with the necessary help and support by organizing and conducting specially designed events and activities. The conditions created in this educational institution expand the opportunities for self-realization of the child's personality, the disclosure of individual abilities and capabilities. The generalized results of the survey on parents regarding the cognitive activity of children indicate that it is necessary to integrate the efforts of specialists of the educational institution and parents. In general, it should be emphasized the high degree of parents’ interest and satisfaction with the quality of educational services of MAI AE "P C Ch Y" aimed at the development of children’s cognitive activity. The analysis of the results of the study gave a clear idea on the need to develop a program for the of students cognitive activity development in additional education institutions. The purpose of such a program should be the development of children's cognitive activity on the basis of a system of developmental classes, where modern complex methods and technologies for the development of children's cognitive activity would be used, the structuring of methodological and diagnostic material would be carried out, the age and individual characteristics of children would be taken into account. The creation of such a program will allow systematically and integratively develop the students’ cognitive activity, contribute to the full development and self-development of the individual.
