Abstract. The aim of this research is to determine the facts representing the benefits and drawbacks of digital education. The role of digital education in connection with the closure of educational institutions, policy of self-isolation and similar phenomena during crisis periods on the example of the pressing COVID-19 problem is being researched in the author’s study. The use of digital education tools on a global scale is considered, socio-economic, organizational, technical and technological characteristics that have an influence on the effectiveness of digital education are being compared and identified. The research method is a complex analysis of scientific articles and statistic data on the digital education implementation practices during the pandemics. The article highlights the preconditions for a new era beginning characterized by the integration of the digital education system and the traditional one. The main conclusion of the research is that achieving the quality of education will be possible with integrated development of the most optimal educational concepts, approaches, techniques and technologies combining innovative approaches of a classroom-contact work in higher school and the experience of digital education.
