Abstract. The article is devoted to the analysis of the phenomenon of social and communicative competence within the structure of university educational space and in relation to the socio-political changes taking place in the society. The article focuses on the issues of studying social-communicative competence in relation to the competence approach, the key competences formed alongside with the social-communicative one among university students in relation to the social and cultural space of the university are also under analysis. Also, the article describes in detail the main functions of social-communicative competence and its formation, such as reflexive and evaluative, adaptive, developing, and basic principles such as the principle of scientific and systematic character, integration, individualization, the principle of individually oriented approach and continuity. In addition, the article examines the component composition of social-communicative competence, which includes cognitive, reflective, motivational and activity components. The authors also give definitions to the key concepts of the research - "social-communicative competence" and "formation of social-communicative competence of university students". The social-communicative competence is understood as an integrative quality within a personality, which includes cognitive (receiving the information), reflexive-evaluative (comprehension of the information), motivational (change of self-consciousness and formation of motives leading to activity) and activity (set of certain behaviour patterns) components and assumes the students’ ability to master effectively socially and communicatively meaningful skills necessary for their successful adaptation in the interpersonal space within university and raising their communicative culture and the formation of future professional and social trajectory. The process of social-communicative competence formation is the process of purposeful, integrative and specially-organizational activity of the university students in mastering the skills of effective communication in conditions of social interaction.
