Abstract: In the article the authors turn to the poetic heritage of the English writer O. Wilde. For the first time an attempt is made to determine the Impressionist paradigms in his lyric poetry. Using the methods of historical poetics and comparativistics, the influence of the French poetic tradition on the artistic manner of the English author is studied. Excellent color palette, precise imagery, and Whistler expressiveness of feelings and moods are common to Wilde's poems ("Symphony in Yellow", "Fantaisies Decoratives", "Impressions") and the Impressionists' art. It is not a coincidence that the word "impression" is widely used in his lyrics, appearing in different poems. The poet's verbal painting, which managed to convey all the nuances of his landscape lyrics, at times, resembles the fullness of French Impressionist painters. In his works, he appears as an artist who, through poetry, conveys his impressions of the seen phenomena of the external world, expressing an interest in visual art, putting his works of impressionism on a par with poems from T. Gautier's collection “Enamels and Cameos”. Evolution of Wilde’s descriptive style, from the museum's ornate eloquence characteristic of his early works to the simpler and refined art typical for his mature works, was accompanied by a similar intellectual evolution. We came to the conclusion that the description of urban landscapes provided by the English artist is different from the truly impressionistic representation due to the excessive decorativeness of his imagination.

Keywords: Wilde, impressionism, poetry, painting, decorative fantasy.
