Abstract. The article considers the activity and significance of subsidiary farms in solving the food problem during the Great Patriotic War. The main requirement of the party and government was the transition to food self -sufficiency in the cities of the rear region. The Chelyabinsk region as the rear area was very indicative: a large number of enterprises that produced products for the front were concentrated there, including evacuated ones from the central regions of the country. The article uses archives materials, which are mainly introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. On the basis of the regional documents, an attempt to trace in dynamics the process of constructing a model of subsidiary plots at industrial enterprises of the Chelyabinsk region was made. The authors conclude that by the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, food security issues were not resolved by the country's leadership. Industrial enterprises took on the obligation to provide workers with food and organization of subsidiary farms. However, most heads of the metallurgical enterprises attached them a secondary importance, that was true, in fact, and did not allocate the proper amount of labor and economic resources for their maintenance. The result of the work of utility farms was their low productivity, which did not solve the food problem. Only by the end of the war there was a strengthening of the material and technical base of subsidiary farms.
