Abstract.  Taking into account the severity of the problem of social inequality in modern Russia, the study of the life perception by the poor, their behaviour patterns acquires important scientific and applied significance. When investigating its causes, most specialists focus on the study of its economic component, in which poverty appears to be a consequence of the imperfection of economic, social or political systems. In addition, poverty is viewed from cultural-historical and socio-psychological positions as a system of stereotypes, standard behavioral attitudes and a specific norm of behaviour. Taking into account the fact that poverty is inherent in any society at all stages of its history, this article presents a historical cross-section of this social problem on the example of such an attitude among workers and peasants of the mining Urals to it in the post-reform period. The study was conducted basing on the analysis of proverbs and sayings of this region, which made it possible to look at the situation "from the inside", through the eyes of the people themselves. In the course of the study, we came to the conclusion that in conditions of constant need, Ural workers and peasants have developed their own attitudes, values and strategies of coping behaviour. They are characterized by a differentiated attitude towards various states of poverty, in particular, persistent negativism towards poverty and a lack of empathy and compassion for the poor. In many positions, there is a similarity in the attitude towards the problem of social inequality of the Ural workers and the population of modern Russia. At the same time, differences in the features of their psychological portraits were revealed.

Keywords: poverty, poverty, workers, peasants, the Urals, proverbs, post-reform period.
