Abstract. The article is devoted to the relevant problem of the heroes typology in Russian literature about the Decembrists in the context of current views on Decembrism. The author sets the tasks: to reveal the timeless nature of the conflict "personality and power" in Russian literature associated with the events of December, 14, 1825; to research the literary types features – the noble revolutionary hero in his conflict with the type of "statesman", the persecutor of free thought. The author of the article analyzes the interpretations of the personality of A. H. Benkendorf in the play by E. Radzinsky "Lunin, or the Death of Jacques" (1979) and the novella by Yu. V. Davydova "PodkolodnyBashutsky, or Blue Tulips" (1988-1989). The research is based on these writers’ idea of the developmentin the course of the historical topic the biographical principle developed by A. I. Herzen. In the story "PodkolodnyBashutsky, or Blue Tulips", the interpreter of the image of the chief of the gendarmes of the III Department is an autobiographical narrator, a reflective historian-archivist, alter ego of the novelist Yu. V. Davydov. He comprehends his hero’ fate, repressed during the years of Stalinism, through the lens of the tragedy of Decembrism and in parallel tells about the fate of the persecutor himself – A. H. Benckendorf. The historian-playwright E. Radzinsky also represents the personality of A. H. Benkendorf, but according to the laws of dramaturgy and in a different position – via the eyes of the Decembrist M. Lunin, a prisoner of the Akatuy prison. The novelty of the research is in firstly, identifying the principles of artistic representation of the historical personality of 1825-1845 in the typology of the heroes of Russian literature; secondly, revealing ambivalent features in the type of persecutor, "strangler of freedom", gendarme, ordering to execute or give mercy. The methodology of the article combines biographical, historical-comparative and typological methods of analysis.
