Abstract. In everyday life, people quite often use the definition of “image”, dissolving its meaning somewhat. In scientific research, specifically - research in the historical and psychological field, this category occupies one of the central places, because it affects the perception of the surrounding reality not only by an individual or a group of people, but also by large social strata, ethnic groups, cultures. The process of perception involves reciprocity, the formation of likes / dislikes in the evaluation of subjects. The special field of knowledge deals with issues of mutual perception - historical imagology, which is closely connected with historical and social psychology and actively contacts ethnology, geopolitics, culturology and other scientific disciplines. The central concepts of imagology are the definitions of “national image” and “national stereotype”, and the object of its research is to analyze the formation of images of “our own” and “alien” in national cultures.

Keywords: image, historical and psychological research, national culture, perception, “own” ‑“alien”.
