Abstract
Transformations and changes of traditional culture allow it’s new “reading”. Many elements that characterize traditional culture have already lost their original meaning in the life of some people / ethnic group. Speaking about traditional / folk / ethnic culture, we, first of all, mean festive actions. The scenario of celebratory activities is a synthesis of tradition and innovation. As a result, we can witness how innovation is “transformed” into a tradition. Tradition is stable and viable only if there is a memory - historical, cultural or social. The formation and functioning of the historical individual and collective memory, as well as all its other forms, is facilitated by the process of commemoration. As a social phenomenon, commemoration contributes to the preservation in the public consciousness the memory of the most significant events of the past, the heritage and cultural characteristics of the people. Memory allows the transmission of tradition from generation to generation, which is applicable to materially expressed objects and ideological feelings of the group. The perception of traditional culture and its study in our usual understanding, formed during the study of the course of ethnography / ethnology in the university years, is somewhat different and does not quite correspond to the realities of our time. Studying the elements of tradition that function in modern times, we explore ethnic culture. Traditional culture and ethnic / popular culture are not equivalent concepts. The concept of "traditional culture" in relation to a specific ethnic group allows study only with the functioning of this type of culture. The subject of the scientific search for "ethnic culture" is the past and the realities of modern times. This is valuable for studies of a comparative historical / comparative ethnographic character, when not only historical events, but also cultural phenomena are to be compared.
Keywords: traditional culture, national cultural center, celebration, commemoration, ethnic identity, ethnic culture.
