Abstract

The article presents a review of the Ferrous Metallurgy programme development in Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University (NMSTU) from the university’s foundation up to the present. This is the first review of the kind describing the contribution the departments involved in the development of one of the main programmes made to it, all the difficulties the academic staff faced and overcame and their real accomplishments. The experience related in the article may prove useful for many generations to come. The centre of attention is the research work done by the Steel Metallurgy Department and the Cast Iron Metallurgy Department during the Great Patriotic War. The research workers of Magnitogorsk Mining and Metallurgy Institute in collaboration with other research workers of the Soviet Union worked out new technologies and applied new equipment for the armour steel production, which helped duely to provide the Soviet army with the necessary armament. After the war the academic and research staff of the departments concerned with the Ferrous Metallurgy programme were engaged in the work related to science-based technological advances. These departments can boast of excellent professors and lecturers, which is advantageous for the students majoring in Ferrous Metallurgy. The graduates prove very good specialists in their field. Keeping good old traditions in Ferrous Metallurgy research work and teaching/training methods, the current research and academic staff keep up with the times.
