Abstract

There is a reason to believe that cultural memory and identity are inseparable from each other, they are interdependent. Identity (both individual and collective) gives to a person a sense of himself being in the time, his own involvement in the history of his people. Identity is rooted in memory. Among the events of the past that determine the cultural memory of modern Russian youth, and the student youth in particular, the Great Patriotic War takes a special place. The time that separates the modern generation from the Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War contains a large number of events that could not but affect the cultural memory of the student body. In this regard, it is of particular interest to find out what modern students of Russia remember and know about the Great Patriotic War, how they evaluate the events and facts of those distant years, which, in the students’ opinion, social institutions had and continue to exert maximum influence on the formation of their Great Patriotic War memory. This  knowledge can be obtained only by contacting directly the bearer of such a missing knowledge, exactly the students of the country ,  that was done in the year of the 75th anniversary of the  Soviet people Victory  in the Great Patriotic War. The article presents the results of the fourth wave of the all-Russian monitoring «Students' attitudes towards the Great Patriotic War» held under the auspices of the Russian Society of Sociologists in 2020 (the first wave took place in 2005). The object of the research is traditionally the students of Russian universities – citizens of Russia. The method of collecting information in the fourth wave of monitoring – on-line questioning of students. The data obtained in the study show that the main social institutions that form the cultural memory of modern Russian students about the Second World War are the educational system, family and works of art. The conclusion is made about the need for further study of the values and value orientations of contemporary students. The results of the study allow us to take a different look at the traditional forms of teaching and educational work in the country's universities.
