Abstract. The word family formation as a single-root complex unit of the Russian word-formation system is a relevant object of contemporary linguistic research. Scientists analyze the structure of specific word family formation and develop theoretical aspects of studying the process of formation and development of word family formation roots as well as lexical-word-formation (explanatory-word-formation) roots. We have described the structure of the word family formation with the root "university," characterized the word-formation structures of derivatives and the types of their word-formation meanings, and identified cases of derivational redundancy (the presence of coderivatives with identical lexical meanings). In forming the word family formation with the root “university”, usual, potential, and individual-author derivatives were used, which made it possible to fully demonstrate the speaker's linguistic competence. An increase in the number of derivatives with the root -university- has been noted in recent decades. Factors contributing to the emergence of new words with the root -university- and, consequently, to the development of the word family formation have been identified. Lacunae (including hypothetical ones) are characterized, along with the reasons for their existence and possible ways of filling them. Conclusions are drawn about the word-generating potential of the source word.
