Abstract. The The article examines the project approach in higher education, which is widely spread in the professional training, to develop educational and professional competencies of students. The main purpose of the article was to theoretically substantiate the project technology essence in engineering education, including the identification of the educational advantages of the project-based learning method and the stages of organizing project activities. The article provides an analysis of researchers' views on project-based learning as an effective mechanism for a future specialist training, who is ready to undertake production activities directly after finishing their university education. The emphasis is on the requirement for systematic and consistent use of project technology throughout the subject learning process. It clarifies the idea that the teacher's approach to project technology has its own educational advantages. An example of the creative project "Development of the corporate identity of the Tea shop "OrTEA", successfully implemented by students of the 54.03.01 "Design" training course at the technical university, is given. The presented material allows us to conclude that design-oriented tasks and educational projects are relevant and in-demand technologies that bring the educational process closer to the real conditions for performing professional design work.
