Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the actual problem of the lexical side of speech in older preschool children with mental retardation. In recent years, in the professional psycho-pedagogical environment, as well as in public publications, the problem of growing dynamics of cases of mental retardation in preschool and primary school age children has been raised more and more often. At the same time, it should be noted that mental delay  is the most difficult to diagnose as a separate type of disease or disorders, because it implies a certain set of mental disorders bordering on intellectual impairment. This is evidenced by the fact that mental retardation as an independent diagnosis, neither in the international classification of diseases, nor in the domestic one, actually does not have a separate position. In this regard, the article considers the methods of diagnosing the lexical side of speech in older preschool children with mental retardation. The article presents the results of the ascertaining experiment in the table and diagram, which showed the necessity to perform correctional-developmental work with children possessing some of mental retardation. The main aspects of the implementation of this program, including periodicity, list of topics, methods and ways of its execution are described, and relevant conclusions are drawn in the present work.
