Abstract. The aim of the article is to analyze the knowledge of students from Tajikistan in the field of Russian vocabulary, the use of synonyms in speech in particular. The study relevance is due to the lack of works on this issue in the teaching of Russian as a foreign language. The study was conducted with the involvement of the semantic fields method. To get the goal, a set of special tests and tasks was developed and presented to two groups of first-year students at the Ulyanovsk State Technical University. The control group included students who had difficulties in Russian fluency. The other group consisted of students who had few challenges while communicating with native speakers. The test results confirmed the idea of misunderstanding synonyms by the control group of experiment participants. The study revealed some peculiarities in the use of lexical units related to the application of certain layers of stylistically marked vocabulary. The research of the speech lexical composition of the given student’s group is necessary for the selection of an appropriate educational material promoting the development of speech competencies among such foreign students. The conclusions made in the article can help in the proper development of a methodology for working with vocabulary in Russian language classes as a part of correctional courses for neighboring countries students.
