Abstract. The article is devoted to the issues of studying utopian consciousness in Russian Soviet prose of the first third of the last century: on the example of the epic novel "The Life of Klim Samgin" by A. M. Gorky and the novel "The Road to the Ocean" by L. Leonov. In the article, the author analyzes the codes of the Future in the works of the 1920s and 1930s, which predicted the fate of mankind in the 20th century and the distant future in the codes of world culture. The relevance of the topic is related to the increased interest of Russian literary critics of the 21st century in the ideals of socialist culture. The objectivity of the observations in this study determines the author's historical and literary approach to the texts of epic works. The novelty of the research: along with traditional utopian images ("good", "universal happiness"), the meanings embodied by M. Gorky and L. Leonov in the original images of "earthly paradise", the ways in which the writers encoded their ideas about the mankind happiness in the distant "golden communist age" are revealed and analyzed. The methodology of the article is a combination of typological and semiotic methods.
