Abstract. The article, based on archival sources from the Magnitogorsk City Archive, examines the professional biography of the first head of the geology department at the Magnitogorsk Mining and Metallurgical Institute, Boris Fedorovich Meshcheryakov. Biographical studies have always been an integral part of history, because history, in essence, is the biography of humanity. However, the main attention of researchers is focused to a greater extent on key, iconic figures of major historical processes. However, as Confucius said: "Everything global begins with small things". This study is local in nature and does not quite fit into the general paradigm of the biographies of scientists and teachers of the second and third quarters of the 20th century. At the same time, it is precisely these features that make the historical process voluminous and multifaceted. The methodology of the research is not unique: a biographical method with a refraction on the anthropological turn in history. This combination allows us to trace the professional biography of B. F. Meshcheryakov, divided into three independent periods: the head of the department, the senior lecturer, and a new return to the university. It is interesting that B. F. Meshcheryakov's biography does not go progressively upward. On the contrary: from the head of the department to assistant. Such development reflected the general historical process of the formation and development of Soviet universities and the changing requirements for the teaching staff. If in the first years of B. F. Meshcheryakov's work there was a need for administrators capable of establishing the functioning of the university system, then literally a few years later, the country needed scientists. It was scientific research work that became the cornerstone of the formation of the professorial and pedagogical staff of the institute. People focused on administrative, teaching, and methodological activities were forced to change or leave. It was precisely these processes of the formation and development of Soviet higher education that were reflected in the professional biography of B. F. Meshcheryakov.
